Gurez Valley is one of Kashmir's best-kept secrets. Located near the Line of Control, Gurez is a fairytale landscape of wooden log houses, active shepherd trails, and the towering Habba Khatoon peak. The Kishanganga River cuts a turquoise path through the valley. It was historically part of the ancient Silk Route connecting Kashmir to Gilgit and Kashgar.
This offbeat ride balances scenic tarmac cruises, dirt road riding, and active military checkpoints. It is a soul-stirring look at borderlands, military history at Drass, and local Dard-Shin culture.
Arrive in Srinagar. Transfer to a premium wooden houseboat on Dal Lake. Meet the ride marshal, select your motorcycle (RE Himalayan / Bullet), and enjoy a scenic evening Shikara ride. Overnight in houseboat.
A short, scenic 60km climb winding through pine slopes to Gulmarg. Acclimatize, check the bike engines, and ride up local roads. Spend the night in a cozy alpine cottage.
Ride 120km alongside the roaring Sindh River. Climb past lush meadows and glaciers to the golden meadow of Sonmarg. Walk up to the Thajiwas Glacier snout. Overnight in a hotel.
Drive 130km. Climb the loops of Razdan Pass (3,558m) for a view of Harmukh Peak. Descend into Dawar, the main town of Gurez. Pass multiple military checkposts. Overnight in a local wood-log homestay.
Explore Dawar. Ride to the base of the pyramid-shaped Habba Khatoon Peak. Drink sweet water from the natural spring. Drive close to the Line of Control to interact with local Dard-Shin villagers. Overnight in Dawar.
Trace the route back to the highway. Tackle the rocky slopes of Zoji La Pass (3,528m). Enter the cold desert plains of Drass. Visit the Drass War Memorial to pay respects to the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War. Arrive in Kargil. Overnight in a hotel.
Re-cross Zoji La, descending back to Kashmir Valley. Return the motorcycles in Srinagar. Spend Day 08 shopping for local saffron and carpets, followed by a celebratory group dinner on a houseboat. Overnight in Srinagar.
Transfer to Srinagar Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport after breakfast. Conclude the Kashmir and Gurez Valley border run.
IMPORTANT: Gurez Valley is an active border zone near the Line of Control. Indian Nationals must submit copies of government photo identity cards (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport) at Army checkpoints at Bagtore and Dawar. Foreign Nationals require a Special Protected Area Permit (PAP) from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Cellular connectivity is limited to post-paid BSNL lines.
